VETERINARY ORTHOPEDIC MANIPULATION

Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation (VOM), is a non-invasive healing technique developed by William L. Innman, DVM. It is similar to the techniques used in human chiropractic medicine. Here at Acacia Animal Health Center, Dr. Bausone as well as Dr. John Harrison, a human chiropractitioner licensed in VOM working under the supervision of Dr. Bausone, are pleased to offer this valuable service to our clients.

WHAT CAN VOM TREAT?
-Acute, non-acute and progressive lameness
-Hip Displaysia like syndromes
-Inter-vertebral disc disease
-Progressive myelopathies
-Diseases of the knee
-Torticollis (head tilt)

BENEFITS OF VOM
-Decreasing inflammation and pain, by increasing movement of tissues
-Decreasing swelling and edema
-Dilution of inflammatory by-products within surrounding tissues
-Breaking up abnormal sensory imput and sensitivity
-Relaxing muscles, enabling them to return to tone
-Remobilization of the motor unit of the vertebral segment
-Restoring normal mechanoreceptor adaptive imputs
-Closing the "pain gate" mechanism

CONDITIONS THAT MAY LEAD YOUR VETERINARIAN TO PRESCRIBE VOM TREATMENT:
- Poor performance (animal just not feeling well)
- Limping or impaired use of limbs
- Injury due to accident or trauma
- Post traumatic stress disorder
- Unhealed traumas
- Postural weakness from old age or sedentary lifestyle
- Arthritis and other diseases of the spine or joints
- Animal experiences heightened pain sensitivity
- Physical responses to illness, such as head tilt or urinary incontinence
- Chronic disability that causes tension in other areas of the body
- Past abuse or malnutrition that affects the animal's physical state

VOM is an applied science used by both veterinarians and veterinary chiropractitioners, working together for the well being of your animal companion. The objective of VOM is to send an "impulse" into the spinal and neurological segments, affecting the neurological information between the brain and body. this provides relief from pain or discomfort and influences the body's ability to initiate the healing process via the nerve pathways.

VOM is useful in the treatment of rabbits, dogs, horses, cats and any other quadraped that has a spine and nervous system. If there is a dysfunction in the body of the animal, there is a real probability of nerve interference due to abnormal spine positioning from a variety of causes. These can include trauma, muscle weakness or disease.

The VOM technique provides stimulation to the proprioceptive nerves around the joint complex, thereby reducing swelling and chemical by-products of bony misalignment and pain, allowing the body to begin the healing process.

The VOM treatment includes an impluse device and a percussion massager. The impulse device is used exclusively in the veterinary myofascial release technique that is part of VOM. This device is micro-adjustable to suit the needs of each animal. The impulse device is so fast that the animal's body does not resist or respond negatively, and will actually relax during and after treatment. Most animals begin to respond within three to five treatments. The handheld percussion massager applies a gentle up and down vibration that relaxes tight muscles and joints, and reduces inflammation.
